An economist by training, Datuk Seri Dr. Shafiq Sit obtained his Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree and a Master of Arts Degree majoring in Economics from the University of Cambridge, UK as a Cambridge Commonwealth Trust Scholar. Subsequently, on a Rhodes Scholarship, he obtained a Masters of Philosophy Degree in International Relations and a Doctorate of Philosophy Degree from the University of Oxford, UK. He has also attended various management courses including one with distinction from Harvard, USA.

Dr. Shafiq Sit was formerly attached to the Corporate Finance Division of N.M. Rothschild & Sons, UK, and was Head of Corporate Planning at Sime Darby Berhad, during which he also sat on several boards within the Sime Darby Berhad Group, including SD Holdings and Yayasan Sime Darby. He has served as the Co-Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Summit and was also the Executive Director of the APEC Business Advisory Council, which reports to the APEC leaders. Dr. Shafiq Sit is also the founding Member of a couple of APEC non-profit organizations which helped implement public-private initiatives on economic and technical cooperation, including region-wide oil and gas plus energy group initiatives such as the APEC Clean Energy Initiatives, working alongside international oil majors like Shell, BP and Petronas.

Datuk Seri Dr. Shafiq Sit has sat, currently sits on and has advisory roles to the Board of several public-listed and private companies in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Timur Leste and other Asian countries. Among these companies include Maya Petroleum, Boustead Petroleum (BHPetrol), Pelantar Sistem, Voyage Frontier, Tele Dynamics (Toshiba Malaysia), Ingenuity Solutions Bhd, the Asia News Broadcasting Group of Companies, Thaicom Network Ltd (Thailand), Morakot Industries Thai Ltd (Thailand), PT Fajar Surya Kencana (Indonesia), Petro-Mekong, and Towertel Corp.

In his career, Dr. Shafiq Sit has received numerous awards and recognitions, such as the Outstanding Malaysian Award and the Malaysian Institute of Management “Malaysian Manager of the Year” Award. He has also written and presented papers at international conferences, including the Asia Young Leaders Forum in Beijing, China and the Global Economic Leaders Symposium in San Francisco, USA.

Dr Shafiq Sit is involved in important charity work involving orphanages and poverty-stricken children in the region.

Coronavirus COVID-19 Cure and Dr Shafiq Sit

Dr Shafiq Sit Some say the Coronavirus is God-sent to compel the world to come together in a collective defence to save mankind. Too much apathy towards global warming etc with our disgraceful meek response in terms of just no single use plastics. That’s definitely not enough to save us. Even the turtles are laughing. We are forced now to face reality of an increasingly crowded planet with scarce resources fast depleting, and now for some reason finger pointing towards the Chinese is trending. As if that’s going to save the world. As if that’s going to find a cure. Maybe for COVID-19 in 6 months of this posting. What about the next virus we will stumble on to? What if this next one emanates from the U.S. or heaven forbids even maybe Jerusalem? Then how? Look to the U.S. for global leadership? Not going to happen under Trump. He is no Mr Global. Maybe he can tweet us to boredom, and like a lullaby we sleep forever. Maybe less painful than to be woken up at 3 am to read his bulls...
